Innovation für besseres Sehen:
Von der ersten PRK bis zum Crosslinking
Prof. Dr. Dr. Theo Seiler gilt als Pionier der modernen Augenlaser- und Hornhautchirurgie.
Er entwickelte 1983 den ersten klinischen Farbstofflaser und 1984 neuartige Oberflächenspulen für die Magnetresonanztomographie der Augenhöhle. 1985 führte er die weltweit erste phototherapeutische Keratektomie (PTK) am menschlichen Auge durch, 1987 folgte die erste photorefraktive Keratektomie (PRK), 1988 die erste Holmium-YAG-Laser-Thermokeratoplastik und 1989 die ersten klinischen Studien zu PRK.
1995 erfand Prof. Dr. Dr. Seiler das corneale Crosslinking (CXL), das 1998 erstmals klinisch angewendet wurde und heute als Standardverfahren zur Stabilisierung der Hornhaut gilt.
1999 führte er die erste wellenfrontgeführte Augenlaser-Behandlung weltweit durch, 2002 folgte die erste topographiegesteuerte Laserbehandlung mit dem WaveLight-Laser.
2010 kombinierte er erstmals LASIK mit rapid Crosslinking, um die Behandlungsmöglichkeiten weiter zu verbessern.

Vom Physiker zum Pionier
der refraktiven Augenchirurgie
Prof. Dr. Dr. Theo Seiler studierte zunächst Mathematik und Physik, bevor er Medizin an der Freien Universität Berlin abschloss. Dort promovierte er sowohl in Physik (1975) als auch in Medizin (1984, summa cum laude) und habilitierte sich 1987 mit Arbeiten zur refraktiven Hornhautchirurgie. Nach Stationen als Oberarzt und Professor an der FU Berlin leitete er ab 1993 die Augenklinik des Universitätsklinikums Dresden und wechselte 2000 als Direktor an die Augenklinik der Universität Zürich.
2002 gründete er in Zürich das Institut für Refraktive und Ophthalmo-Chirurgie (IROC), in dem er bis heute innovative Verfahren der refraktiven- und Hornhaut-Chirurgie sowie der physiologischen Optik entwickelt und erforscht.

Diese Auszeichnung wird für herausragende Beiträge in der Hornhaut- und vorderen Augensegmentforschung verliehen.
In seiner umfangreichen Auszeichnungsliste finden sich viele renommierte Preise der AAO, wie der Honour Award (1997), President's Award (2002), Lifetime Achievement Award (2004) und Senior Achievement Award (2009).
